Couples who met on the Internet, happier and less likely to get divorced - BBC

American couples, first met through online dating services, on average, are happier than the couple of “traditional” families, and less likely to divorce compared to them, say psychologists in an article published in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences .

«The current marriage depends on many circumstances. The location and nature of the meeting of the spouses – only one of them, and the effect is not always observed, and the contribution to the overall outcome remains quite small. Nevertheless, the results of our study are encouraging, given the changes in the tradition of the first site in the community of the United States, “- said John Cacioppo of the University of Chicago (USA).

Cacioppo and his colleagues came to this conclusion after analyzing the history of marriage and divorce in American families, which they provided the company eHarmony, managing one of the largest online dating services since 2000. According to psychologists, the corporation did not interfere with the course of the study and its findings have been verified by independent experts according to the procedures adopted by the American Medical Association. In total, the researchers analyzed data on 19,000 families living Americans, about half (45%) of whom met his future wife or spouse through online dating sites. According to them, the cultural baggage and welfare of the people of the two groups were significantly different, with a predominance of wealthy middle-aged people in the “online”-families.

found that families of Americans who met online, fell apart less frequently (26%) than conventional couples. In addition, the spouses in such “cell of society” feel generally happier than their counterparts in the “offline”-families. Scientists believe that the success of such dating is the fact that users of online dating sites have to lay out a huge amount of information about themselves, which allows them to get to know the future halves before their first date.
