Lake Baikal age glaciers found in 100,000 years - the Russian newspaper

Glaciers age of about a hundred thousand years have been found in the Irkutsk scientists Barguzinsky Ridge (the northern coast of Lake Baikal). Previously it was thought that the glaciers in Eastern Siberia is not due to the climate, the press service of the Irkutsk Scientific Center (ISC), Russian Academy of Sciences.

The first reports of the discovery on the Barguzinsky ridge, which is considered one of the most remote places on the planet, have been around since 1985, but it was not possible to confirm the information until the summer of 2013. The expedition, which included scientists from the Institute of Geography named Sochava this summer surveyed eight sites glaciation. As a result, scientists have found that two of them are real glaciers, their age is estimated at one hundred thousand years.

– Glacier is quite steep (slope of about 30 degrees), pyatisantimetrovym slippery and covered with a layer of falling on it in the literal sense of ice water. In addition, he is constantly “crawling” down, and on its surface cracks, dusted with snow, which is very easy to please. Moreover, at intervals of ten minutes down the glacier rushing stones the size of a small car – said in a research center.

According to scientists, the regular monitoring of changes in the boundaries of glaciers will allow to draw conclusions about the trends of climate change in the mountains north of Lake Baikal. In theory, these glaciers may yield information on how the climate changed over the last hundred thousand years.
