Participants of the international expedition, which took place in the framework of the joint Russian-German project Research Institute of Biology, Irkutsk State University and the German Center for Environmental Research Helmholtz discovered unknown to science crustacean amphipods from the group and described it unfolded in an article in the International Journal of Systematic Zoology Zootaxa. The aim of the expedition was to assess the impact of global climate change on Lake Baikal.

Today in the lake has opened more than 350 species of amphipod crustaceans, and it is the largest group of organisms in the lake, fully represented endemic – unique species found only in one place.

“Members of the expedition, is performed in the framework of the joint project of Institute of Biology Irkutsk State University and the Center for Environmental Studies. Helmholtz (Germany) to assess the impact of global climate change on the biota of Lake Baikal, found in the waters of the lake from the group of crustaceans amphipods, previously unknown to science, “- said the press service of the Irkutsk State University (ISU).

The find was made in the northern part of Lake Baikal, near the mouth of the river Tyya. First on the unusual crustaceans noticed the youngest participant of the expedition, Ph.D. Daria Bedulina and scholar of the German Center for Environmental Research Helmholtz Till Lyukenbah.

When Daria Bedulina found unusual crustaceans, they were handed over to the head of a laboratory study “Environment and of Baikal “Research Institute of Biology, Irkutsk State University Professor Vadim Tahteevu. Expedition changed plans and went in search of new specimens of this species to describe it in detail. Vadim himself Tahteev noted that when biologists offer new kinds of plants and animals, they are happy as well as astronomers at the opening of the new celestial bodies.

A participant of the expedition Daria Bedulina surprised that these crustaceans nobody noticed before. Bedulina added that the formation of new species in the lake is faster than in other parts of the Earth.

The name of the new species – Eulimnogammarus messerschmidtii (eulimnogammarus Messerschmidt). It was named in honor of Daniel Gottlieb Messerschmidt – the first explorer of Siberia and one of the first members of the Russian (St. Petersburg) Academy of Sciences, which was invited by Peter I. Messerschmidt first scientist went on the lake, but none of this kind of organisms from Lake Baikal was not named after him the name.

The international research project aimed at evaluating the potential impact of global climate change on the biota of Lake Baikal. In particular, the estimated parameters of stress stability of dominant species of Baikal amphipod crustaceans. These crustaceans resembling shrimp, play a crucial role in the Lake Baikal, being, in fact, one of the key elements of the entire ecosystem of the lake.

The head of the Russian-German project director of the Institute of Biology ISU professor Maxim Timofeev believes that Baikal may present more surprises.

By the way, in late February, researchers from the Brazilian Research Institute said that they found on the territory of the Amazon more than 150 types of new animals and 14 previously known species of plants.
