On Baikal open a previously unknown type of amphipod crustaceans – KM.RU

In Lake Baikal international group of scientists discovered a previously unknown type of amphipod crustaceans, the press service of the Irkutsk State University.

Article about the opening was published in the journal Zootaxa.

In Currently, the Lake Baikal open more than 350 species of amphipod crustaceans. According to scientists, this is the largest group of organisms in the lake, which is fully represented endemic – unique species found only in one place.

The new species was discovered in the northern part of the lake, near the mouth of the river Tyya. It was named after the first explorer of Siberia and the Baikal Daniel Gottlieb Messerschmidt and was named Eulimnogammarus messerschmidtii.
