Russian scientists have learned to turn the aluminum to steel – BFM.Ru

Russian scientists from the National Research Technological University MISA using nanotubes and nanospheres of boron nitride have learned to give the characteristics of aluminum steel, informs portal “Vesti.ru».

The head of the scientific team in charge of these developments is Professor Dmitri Golberg. In 2011, scientists have received funding in the amount of 150 million rubles, which allowed them to purchase a lot of important equipment, including electron microscope. For the purchase of equipment went to 75% of the grant. Now, researchers are developing a promising composite based on aluminum – stronger than steel and lighter than regular aluminum. In a world of only two research centers that have achieved notable success in this area – in MISA and in Tsukuba, Japan.

Preparation of metal, light as aluminum, but is 25 times more durable, made possible by the unique for Russia and New World Technology hardening materials using boron nitride nanotubes. In the short term, researchers from Russia are going to exceed the strength of steel at 2-3. At present the University has applied for an extension of mega-grants for 2 years with funding of 60 million rubles. Half of this sum under the terms of the competition is to highlight the MISA. While the cost of the project is high, it takes time to reduce the cost of manufacturing of innovative material and reach the industrial scale, however, a unique development is already interested in several organizations, including the “Rusal” and “Skolkovo».
