Scientists from Russia proved the birth of thermonuclear explosions of supernovae – the Russian Newspaper

The opening of Russian astrophysicists confirmed the theory of supernovae of type Ia.

Article about the discovery published in one of the most authoritative scientific journal Nature. Leading authors are astrophysics from the Institute of Space Research. This discovery confirmed the theory that type Ia supernovae are born as a result of a giant thermonuclear explosions of white dwarfs.

It should be noted that this theory is proposed for a long time. She argues that the explosion of a supernova synthesized a large amount of radioactive nickel-56. Then begins the decay chain: Nickel converted into cobalt-56, and already it decays into iron. Moreover, during the break-born gamma photons that they live a very long and they are very difficult to observe. But this theoretical model, scientists could not confirm it. The fact that in the history of observations from space, that is, more than half a century, there have been no supernova type Ia in any of the closest galaxies. Last reliably confirmed explosion of a star in our galaxy occurred in 1604. She was named the Kepler supernova.

So incredibly lucky: in January 2014, the British astronomer Steve Focsi noticed a new bright star. By all indications, it was a supernova of type Ia, she was named SN2014J. Russian scientists have observed this phenomenon by the orbiting International INTEGRAL observatory. As a result, they were able to see the signs of decay of radioactive cobalt in the gamma-ray spectrum of the supernova. This was the first confirmation of the well-known theory. In astrophysics attended Russian Evgeny Churazov, Rashid Sunyaev, Sergey Sergey Sazonov crest and from the Institute of Space Research, as well as Nikolai Chugai from the Institute of Astronomy.
