The first Indian probe “Mangalyan”, launched in November 2013, launched successfully on Mars. India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi called it a historic event and congratulated all the employees of the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO). The project cost is estimated at $ 74 million.

Earlier withdraw its spacecraft to orbit the planet’s only been able to Roskosmos, NASA and the European Space Agency. At the same time ISRO has become the only organization who managed to do it on the first try.

The spacecraft will orbit around Mars in an elliptical orbit, closer to the surface of the planet to the minimum distance – 420 kilometers. According to the authors of the project, main purpose of the mission is to test technologies needed for future manned Mars program in India . Prime Minister Narendra Modi watched breeding “Mangalyana” into orbit, he stressed, “that scientists from India have made history,” and “India was the first country who once were able to successfully carry out the mission to Mars”.

Despite the many obstacles, we were able to achieve success . This is a perfect example of what we can achieve as a nation. Suppose that success leads us to new challenges and helps to further expand our horizons” – quoted Modi ITAR-TASS. My congratulations to the ISRO also sent President Pranab Mukherjee.

Probe “Mangalyan” was launched into space in early November of 2013. The spacecraft has special spectrometers with which scientists hope to study in detail the atmosphere and the surface of the planet. The probe is based on its own development of Indian scientists.

It should be noted that the Indian orbital mission to Mars has set several records. Firstly, it was the most inexpensive in the history of space exploration: the entire mission, including the golden probe the size of a small car and weighing in at 1.3 tonnes, India has managed just $ 76 million .

As the Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi, it is much less than the budget of a Hollywood blockbuster, “Gravity”, will be approximately $ 100 million. For comparison, an American Mars probe MAVEN, which came out in a Mars orbit two days earlier “Mangalyana” worth ten times more. Secondly, experts ISRO constructed “Mangalyan” as soon as possible: it took only 15 months.
