Astronomers first saw the aurora outside our solar system – NEWSru.com

Scientists first discovered auroras outside the solar system. A team of scientists from different countries saw the radiance of one of the brown dwarf in the constellation Lyra at a distance of 18 light years, writes BBC with reference to the magazine Nature .

Astronomers say that the observed glow similar to terrestrial auroras, only a million times brighter than that, it is rather red, not green as in the world.

According to Stuart Littlfera astronomer at the University of Sheffield, this is the first observation of the aurora in the brown dwarf.

Aurora may appear on all the planets of the solar system and formed by the interaction of charged solar particles to the atmosphere of the planet. However, a brown dwarf – a celestial body is too small to become a star, and too massive to be a planet, which found radiance lies beyond.

It is a dwarf LSR J1835, observing that were using a radio telescope VLA, Hale Telescope and the Keck Observatory Hawaii.

The data correspond to the pattern observed with the appearance of the aurora. This aurora on a brown dwarf predominantly red, as the charged particles interact with hydrogen in the atmosphere of a celestial body. Green Glow in the world is due to the interaction with atoms of oxygen.

At the same time, scientists are not yet able to determine the nature of this phenomenon: a brown dwarf – a nedozvezda, next to which there is a star like our Sun, capable of producing a stream of charged particles.

“Probably, the electrons are produced from the material on the surface of the dwarf” – says Littlfer. Also, chances are that close to the cry has not yet discovered a planet or moon, which may also throw stuff. Thus there auroras on Jupiter, receiving charged particles that emit its volcanoes of Io.

The discovery has also helped scientists better understand the nature of brown dwarfs. Currently, there are disputes, what type of celestial bodies, they are more inclined on properties – to the stars or planets. Dr. Littlfer reported that scientists have been aware of the presence of clouds in the atmosphere of brown dwarfs, with the discovery of the aurora have more reason to talk about these objects as scaled versions of the planets, not the smaller version of the stars.
