The results of analysis of samples of air and dust samples, assembled at the International Space Station allowed to make the most complete “map” of microorganisms living on the ISS. Among them were discovered and potentially dangerous – diphtheria and skin diseases. Relevant Article published in the journal Microbiome.

To determine which microorganisms live on the ISS, the astronauts took samples from the air filter, which have not changed for 40 months, and dust samples of the vacuum cleaner bag. Genetic analysis found there microorganisms allowed to make them more comprehensive list, and it turned out that the ISS live and potentially harmful bacteria.

Genetic analysis of microorganisms showed that the most common on the ISS microorganisms are actinobacteria, among which the presence of microorganisms species Corynebacterium diphtheriae – diphtheria, as well as agents of skin diseases called Propionibacterium . However, the real ability of these microorganisms cause disease astronauts far from obvious: as stated by one of the authors of the study, the virulence can be one or two cells, but not enough to infect a person.
