Helsinki, 18 November 2015, 12:30 – REGNUM of geneticists from the University of Helsinki (Finland) opened a mutation in the gene 5-HT2B, occurring in approximately 2.2% of the population. Holders of this mutation after consuming large quantities of alcohol become aggressive, according to a paper published in the journal Translational Psychiatry.
According to the results of genetic analysis, those who are not lucky to be born with this mutation are more impulsive and sober. In addition, they often suffer from problems with a lack of self-control, manic-depressive syndrome and other affective disorders.
The data used in the analysis were gained in the observation of the families of the quiet and violent alcoholics in the past. It turned out that the riot itself leading Finns has an unusual version of the gene 5-HT2B, which is responsible for the assembly of the so-called serotonin receptor type 2B.
They allow neurons to respond to the molecule serotonin – signal substance responsible for transmitting signals between brain cells. A mutation in the gene 5-HT2B somehow causes disturbances in the transmission of serotonin signals – and its owners are violent and aggressive under the influence of alcohol.
