NASA: Pluto is covered with half-frozen water – BBC

New Horizons probe is transmitted to Earth pictures, showing that half of Pluto’s surface is covered by water ice, according to Rambler News Service with reference to NASA. Previously it was thought that on its surface is dominated by ice from nitrogen and methane.

Experts NASA studied and processed data from the spectroscope LEISA, allowing to detect water and ice, to assess the depth of their location and thickness. It was found that under a layer of methane, nitrogen and ammonia ice arranged arrays of water ice that maintain relief of Pluto.

Compilation according LEISA maps show that water ice is found in half of the regions of the hemisphere of Pluto, by which flying New Horizons .
