Nine giant stars discovered “Hubble” – REGNUM

Washington, March 18, 2016, 08:29 – REGNUM Using the space telescope “Hubble” discovered nine giant stars whose mass is more than 100 times the mass of the sun, according to NASA.

The cluster of stars called R136 located in the Tarantula nebula in the dwarf galaxy the large Magellanic cloud in 170 thousand light-years from Earth. Although their weight, they do not exceed the champion R136a1, the mass of which exceeds 250 times the sun, but they are surprisingly intense brightness. These stars are brighter than our sun is 30 million times.

The researchers stressed that only “Hubble” equipment can be detected these objects as opening took decomposed into components of ultraviolet radiation from this region of the universe.

The theoretical possibility of the existence of such giant stars was proved in 2010 by British astrophysicists.

The details of this discovery will be presented in the monthly report of the Royal Astronomical Society.
