The Dutch government intends to permit the cultivation of human embryos in the laboratory for research.
According to The Guardian, Health Minister Edith Shippers explained that the study concerns infertility, assisted reproduction techniques, hereditary and congenital diseases. According to doctors, the research and development will give people the opportunity to have healthy children, as well as to cure infertility after a battle with cancer at an early age.
Earlier, the Netherlands law allows to carry out tests only on embryos left over after in vitro fertilization procedure (IVF). At the same time, “14-day rule”, according to which it is impossible to grow embryos in the laboratory for more than two weeks, will continue to be respected.
In February, British researchers got permission to use genetic engineering methods to study the early stages of embryo development, aimed at improving fetal survival.
