The American astronomers have discovered the largest exoplanet, rotating once around two stars.

Open a celestial body, resembling Jupiter in its parameters, it was possible thanks to data collected by space telescope Kepler.

Exoplanet Kepler-1647b is located at a distance of 3700 light years from Earth in the constellation Cygnus, and its age is approximately 4.4 billion years. Since it is likely, it is a gas giant, the life on it is not possible. But if she has large satellites, then potentially they could be suitable for life, scientists believe. Its orbit is such that the planet is in the so-called habitable zone, that is an area where water can exist in liquid form.

According to the mass and size of this exoplanet is comparable to Jupiter. its orbital period around the binary star system is 1107 days, ie more than three years.

The planets that orbit two stars, often referred to as “Tatooine” in honor of the eponymous planet of the famous “Star Wars”. The researchers note that detect such objects more difficult than those that revolve around single stars.

Luminaries of this binary system look like our Sun – one slightly larger than our parent star, the other, on the contrary, it is slightly inferior in size

.

Scientific report with the results of the discovery was presented Monday at the American Astronomical Society meeting, held in San Diego. The authors of the study was the team of astronomers led by scientists from the Centre for Space Flight. Goddard NASA.

The scientific results will be published in the Astrophysical Journal publication.
