NASA has found a lost companion – BBC News

NASA managed to restore contact with one of the spacecraft studying solar activity, the official website of the organization.

Contact STEREO-B unit was lost October 1, 2014 after the system reboots during one of the tests. Since then, NASA experts have worked on the restoration of contact with the lost object.

Recently, scientists have tried to use satellite telemetry (tracking station for deep outer space, located in the world). This allowed to reconnect with the STEREO-B.

The signal from the station was received at 18:27 on the North American summer ET (1:27 Moscow time). At the moment, we were able to establish the whereabouts of the satellite. It is planned to assess the condition of the lost device systems and regain full control over it.

Total NASA launched two instruments for studying solar activity. They give scientists the opportunity to get three-dimensional images of phenomena on the sun and help to predict geomagnetic activity in space. Moreover, the devices will allow to specify the map of the solar system and set its boundaries.

Recently, the US space agency announced the start of the mission, during which the spacecraft will fly to the asteroid, will there soil samples and bring them back to Earth. This is a unique mission – before spacecraft did not return to earth after such operations
