From the draft updated edition of the red Book of Russia want to eliminate 15 rare species of animals, including 11 species of marine mammals. The representatives of the environmental organizations Greenpeace and the international Fund for animal welfare (IFAW) has sent about it the letter to the Ministry of environment. According to them, for this exception there is absolutely no reason to.

representatives of the environmental organizations require the Ministry to provide them with information based on which with rare animals suddenly decided to do so. They suggested the officials not to make rash decisions behind the scenes, and to bring to this discussion, independent specialists, recognized in the international scientific community.

by the Way, the draft of the new edition of the red Book is already in the public domain, to be discussed until September 19. A total of delisting offers 127 rare species of animals. However, if about 112 of them objections, have no experts, over 15 other environmental organizations are ready to compete. In their opinion, without sufficient reason to the list for exclusion included 3 subspecies of seals, Atlantic Whiteside Dolphin, white-beaked Dolphin, Risso’s Dolphin, harbour porpoise (North Pacific subspecies), false killer whale, highbrow butylenes and klaveril. In addition to them without protection are left carnivore of the weasel family — ligation, the aboriginal population of the Ussuri Sika deer and 2 species of fish — Pereslavl whitefish and European grayling. It is also anticipated and lowering the environmental category of the Steller sea lion.

Theoretically, from the red book of Russia, the animal can be excluded. However, we need to prove either that its population has recovered, or the conditions around you become better, or this species has just become extinct and to protect nothing more. According to the rules of the regions had at least once in three years to come, data for state records. “But data on these species there, so we can’t say that they became more or live it became easier. In such cases, the species from the red book it is impossible to remove” – said in the IFAW.

“the omission of these species from the red book seems to us unreasonable, it may lead to significant negative consequences. All of these species are poorly studied and rare, — the letter says environmental organizations. — As far as we know, a systematic census of the population of these species was not conducted, there is no statistically confirmed evidence and the restoration of strength.”

– the Purpose of our letter is to prevent the exclusion of these species from the red book of Russia. We work with scientists of international level, who are actively engaged in the study of marine mammals. Alas, today it is premature to talk about lowering or removing the protected status from these types of animals, — the Director of representative office in Russia of the International Fund of Protection Maria Vorontsov. In this regard, we proposed to invite for debate and independent experts of the international level. For its part, we can also provide written opinions of the scientists supporting the need to maintain protected status.

– We must not allow those animals, data on the population size which is not supported by clear scientific research, has lost the protection of the state. And above all we are talking about marine mammals (including dolphins) that must remain in the red data book of Russia, — said the expert of Greenpeace Russia Andrei Petrov.

– In the oceans is constantly increasing risks to marine mammals associated with human activity. They include physical, chemical and noise pollution, reduction and destruction of their habitats. In our country there is a presumption of ecological danger and prohibited activities that could threaten species listed in the Red book or their habitats. In a situation when there is no current data on the status of rare and indigenous species listed in the Red book, their exclusion from this document may lead to unpredictable consequences, says marine mammal specialist Grigory Tsidulko.

animal Advocates are willing to provide a written opinion of scientists, justifying the need to preserve all of the wrongfully excluded species as endangered.
